APA – Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) The Ivorian Issa Sanogo replaces Barbara Manzi, who was declared “non grata” in December 2022 following a misunderstanding with the military government in Burkina Faso.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres appointed Issa Sanogo as the new Resident Coordinator of the United Nations system in Burkina Faso, APA learned from reliable sources.
The Ivorian will take up his post in Ouagadougou in the coming weeks, according to several media reports.
This United Nations official, who was announced in Burkina Faso, has around twenty years of experience.
Since October 2020, he has been the United Nations Resident Humanitarian Coordinator in Madagascar.
Issa Sanogo will fill a post that has been vacant since December 2022, the date of the expulsion of Barbara Manzi, the former UN system coordinator, who was declared “persona non grata” by the government in Ouadagoudou.
The ruling military junta accused her of interfering in Burkina Faso’s state affairs and of wanting to evacuate non-essential UN personnel in view of the security situation.
