The president of Cote d’Ivoire, Alassane Ouattara, has pledged continued cooperation with Liberia’s new president.
“My warmest congratulations and best wishes to Joseph Boakai, President-elect of Liberia,” Ouattara wrote in a message posted on his Facebook page on Tuesday as he “looks forward to continuing with him to strengthen the historic relations of brotherhood and cooperation” between the two countries, in the mutual interest of their peoples.
Cote d’Ivoire and Liberia are two neighbours in West Africa.
The 78-year-old Liberian president-elect is the country’s third democratically elected president since the end of the civil war.
Boakai, a former vice president under Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (2006-2018) was elected in the run-off against incumbent President George Weah.
