The Prime Minister of Cote d’Ivoire, Patrick Achi, on Wednesday, April 13, 2022, announced his resignation from the government to make way for a downsized cabinet.
Achi handed in his resignation to President Alassane Ouattara during Wednesday’s Council of Ministers.
His resignation also brings an end to the life of his government.
“In this context of extreme international demands, whether sub-continental or global, you have clearly expressed your willingness to reorganize the government, so I would like to respectfully submit my resignation as Prime Minister and that of the entire government,” he said.
Patrick Achi took this opportunity to express his gratitude to President Ouattara for what he called the unique opportunity and the great honor of working with him, while expressing his “unwavering commitment” to his person.
President alassane Ouattara accepted the resignation.
“Mr. Prime Minister, you have just submitted your resignation and that of your government, I accept it in order to strengthen the effectiveness of government action and to take into account the current global economic situation, I have decided to reduce the number of ministers in the government,” the president said.
He explained that “it is imperative to reduce state spending while redirecting it towards social and security resilience. The reduction in the number of ministers will certainly lead to the departure of some of you,” Alassane Ouattara pointed out.
The Ivorian leader said that next week, he will appoint a new prime minister and a smaller government comprising 30 members.
Patrick Achi, a loyal backer of the Ivorian leader was appointed prime minister on 26 March 2021 after the death of Hamad Bakayoko.
