APA-Nairobi (Kenya) The Japanese government has provided an emergency grant aid of $2 million as support to refugees in the Great Lakes region, APA can report on Wednesday.
Since February last year, the humanitarian situation in the region has deteriorated thanks to increased armed activities by non-state actors in the eastern provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
This had led to a mass exodus of refugees flowing into Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania.
”Considering this situation, the Government of Japan will provide health, nutrition, water, sanitation, shelter and essential goods through a total USD 2 million Emergency Grant Aid to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)” a statement from Tokyo said.
Japan, in close coordination with other countries making effort toward stabilising the region, will continue to support people in the Great Lakes region, the statement added.
