The French-Tunisian journalist and businessman Béchir Ben Yahmed who launched the pan-African magazine, Jeune Afrique, in 1960 has died of COVID-19 at the age of 93.
He died Sunday evening, on the eve of the celebration of World Press Freedom Day. The deceased succumbed to the new Indian variant of the coronavirus.
Bachir Ben Yahmed launched Jeune Afrique at the beginning of the independence of several African countries and remained at the helm of the magazine until October 2007, when François Soudan succeeded him. He established himself as a source of information on the entire African continent.
Ben Yahmed also founded Éditions du Jaguar. In 2006, he also created La Revue of which he is the director and editor-in-chief.
His wife Danielle and sons Amir and Marwane Ben Yahmed now hold key positions within the Jeune Afrique group.
