Kenyan President William Ruto has called for regional unity and dialogue to resolve the ongoing conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Amid diplomatic tensions between the DRC and Rwanda, President Ruto emphasised the need for a collective and diplomatic approach to addressing the crisis in the region.
“Peace and security are essential ingredients for trade and investment in our region,” Ruto stated on Monday, highlighting the crucial role of stability.
He welcomed the agreement between the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the East African Community (EAC) to hold a joint summit on the situation in the DRC.
The Kenyan leader reaffirmed his belief that “through our collective efforts, we will ensure security on our continent.”
He confirmed the participation of several heads of state in the extraordinary summit, including Presidents Samia Suluhu (Tanzania), Felix Tshisekedi (DRC), Paul Kagame (Rwanda), Cyril Ramaphosa (South Africa), Yoweri Museveni (Uganda), and Hassan Sheikh Mohamud (Somalia).
This diplomatic initiative comes amid ongoing tensions between the DRC and Rwanda, with both sides trading accusations over military operations in the North Kivu region.
The Dar es Salaam summit, whose date is yet to be determined, is seen as an opportunity for dialogue and de-escalation.
President Ruto underscored the importance of resolving disputes peacefully, advocating for dialogue and regional cooperation over military confrontation.
