President Salva Kiir on Monday played host to his Eritrean counterpart and the Ethiopian prime minister who are in Juba on a day-long working visit on Monday.
A reliable source at the President’s Office in Juba said President Isias Afwerki and his new Ethiopian ally Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed were in talks with President Kirr over issues of regional significance with peace and security at the centre of the meeting.
The ongoing conflict in Ethiopia’s Tigray region where Eritrean soldiers have been allegedly active was also discussed by the three leaders.
The trio who had also met in 2019, have also been concerned about deteriorating relations between Ethiopia and Sudan over a protracted border dispute.
As the three leaders met in Juba, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi traveled to Khartoum for talks with his Sudanese counterpart Abdel Fattah al-Burhan over the vexed issue of a controversial dam Ethiopia has been building on the River Nile since 2012.
Egypt and to a lesser extent Sudan have been opposed to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) over fears that the project could compromise their share of water from the Nile.
Ethiopia has dismissed these fears as unfounded.
