The young coach, who was dismissed after the elimination of Guinea’s Syli National in the round of 16 of the African Cup of Nations 2021, has regained his post.
With the benefit of hindsight, the Normalization Committee of the Guinean Football Federation (Feguifoot) concludes that Kaba Diawara is “more qualified to lead the national team to the expected performances.”
The former Guinean international was in competition with three other candidates. After the dismissal of Frenchman Didier Six, Kaba Diawara was chosen to lead the Syli National. An interim started only three months before the African Cup of Nations held in Cameroon.
Nevertheless, the former attacker of OGC Nice (France) gave confidence to Naby Keita and his teammates by imposing the 3-5-2 system of play. In the first round of the great continental soccer showpiece, Guinea did rather well with a victory against Malawi and a draw against Senegal, the future winner of the event.
Everything was going well, but the defeat, two goals to one, against Zimbabwe, good last of the group, installs the doubt. Gambia, the surprise of the 2021 Can, took advantage of the situation to beat the Syli National in the first knockout match. That day, the consultant of Canal + is the target of projectiles at the end of the match.
In the country, the disappointment is immense because the fans had high hopes. At the beginning of March, Kaba Diawara and his entire staff suffered the consequences. Against all odds, he made an express return that occurred two days after the draw for the qualifiers for the 2023 Ivory Coast. Guinea is in the same group as Malawi, Ethiopia and Egypt.
