Rwandan President Paul Kagame has arrived in San Francisco, USA where he is expected to co-chair the annual meeting of the Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development alongside Facebook’s Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg, an official statement issued late Monday in Kigali said.
The Broadband Commission was established in 2010 with the aim of boosting the importance of broadband on the international policy agenda and expanding broadband access in every country.
In 2015, the Commission was re-launched as the Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development following the adoption of UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
The main Broadband Commissionmeeting will be preceded by Working Group meetings and followed by an Innovation tour, it said.
Held under the theme Shaping the future of the Broadband for Sustainable Development, the commissioners and special guests will tackle three key areas; Digital transformation and the future of broadband for sustainable development.
Feedback from working groups will focus on key themes including Digital Infrastructure Moonshot in Africa and child safety online and Innovative partnerships in the digital ecosystem – fostering access, use and digital skills in the post 5-50 world, the statement said.
In the evening, President Kagame will attend a World Economic Forum (WEF) Roundtable where he will speak to Sillicom Valley investors about opportunities in the tech sector.
The last BBComm meeting was held in September 2018 in New York, according to the same source.
