Rwandan President Paul Kagame said on Thursday that there are negative forces hiding behind politics, freedom and democracy to undermine his country’s national security.
Kagame was speaking at a ceremony to swear in new cabinet members and senior military officials in Kigali.
“We are going to raise the means we put in security, and make it expensive for anyone involved in schemes to destabilize the country. The cost is going to be very high” he warned.
“Where we are today, we have taken security more or less for granted…We will continue to take it for granted by any means” Kagame added.
Speaking shortly after the swearing in of the new cabinet members and senior military officials, the Rwandan leader also pointed out that those people who want to destabilize the country are going to incur a very high price.
“Youcannot be here benefitting from the peace and security that we have created, that we have paid for in blood over many years and then you do things behind our backs and cause us problems,” he said.
The newly appointed members of Rwanda’s cabinet include ministers Jeanne d’Arc Mujawamariya (Environment), Gen Patrick Nyamvumba (Internal Security), Aurore Mimosa Munyangaju (Sports).
Also sworn in are Edouard Bamporiki who was appointed State Minister in the Ministry of Youth and Culture, as well as Ignatienne Nyirarukundo, the new Minister of State in charge of Social Affairs in the Ministry of Local Government.
Kagame’s remarks come after an attack carried out by a group of unknown assailants last month targeting civilians in Kinigi, a village in northern Rwanda near the border with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
According to the Rwandan police, at least 14 local villagers were killed during a raid by assailants wielding machetes in the village located near the dense forest.
