According to the statistics office, between November and December 2018, food and non-alcoholic drinks’ Index increased by 1.05 per cent, due to an increase in prices of some foodstuffs.
In November, the country’s overall inflation rate rose marginally to 5.58 percent from 5.53 percent in October mainly due to an increase in the cost of transport.
“Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels’ Index, increased by 0.07 per cent in December 2018 compared to November 2018. However, the cost of household electricity consumption for 50 as well as for 200 KWh remained at the same level as in November 2017,” the statistics office said in a statement issued in Nairobi.
KNBS said that during the same review period, the transport Index increased by 1.34 per cent, mainly on account of increase in local and international flight charges as well as bus and matatu (Public service Vans) fares.
The upsurge in the transport, food, clothing and foot ware prices was attributed to increased demand that was associated to Christmas festivities, KNBS said.
