During a two-day working visit to Nairobi, Somali President Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with his Kenyan counterpart, Dr. William Ruto, to discuss issues of mutual interest.
The two leaders emphasized the importance of open dialogue and mutual respect in addressing bilateral issues. They also discussed regional and international matters, including Somalia’s role in the United Nations Security Council and the ongoing efforts to maintain peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.
President Ruto congratulated Somalia on its election to the UN Security Council and acknowledged its potential to play a key role in global governance. He also commended Kenya’s support for Somalia’s state-building efforts and the role of the Kenya Defense Forces in combating terrorism.
The two leaders agreed on the importance of a smooth transition from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to the new African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). They also stressed the need for adequate support for the implementation of the Somali Security Development Plan.
In terms of economic cooperation, the Presidents reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral trade and investment relations. They agreed to work towards removing obstacles to market access and facilitating the movement of goods and services.
The Joint Cooperation Commission (JCC) between Kenya and Somalia will continue to play a vital role in strengthening bilateral ties. The two countries anticipate holding the 4th session of the JCC in Somalia in 2025.
