Provisional results of Tuesday’s presidential election in Kenya suggest a tight race between frontrunners deputy president William Ruto and veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga, APA can report from Nairobi on Wednesday.
With more than 85 percent of the results posted, the pair look to be neck and neck.
The winner of the presidency must garner over 50 percent of the votes.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is expected to announce the results in the next three days, some of its officials have said.
IEBC figures show that there has been just over 60 percent voter turnout for Tuesday’s vote which though largely peaceful was also marred by failures of electornic voting devices used in the exercise.
Over 22 million Kenyans had been registered to vote.
Corruption, unemployment and an ailing economy were the main focus of months of campaign by the four candidates cleared to run for the presidency.
Two other contenders considered outsiders also ran for the presidency, namely David Waihiga Mwaure of the Agano Party and George Wajackoyah of the Roots Party of Kenya.
