Emmanuel Naibei of Kenya on Saturday emerged the winner of the 2021 edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon held in Lagos.
Nabei returned a time of 2:15:01 to claim the top prize of $30,000
Although the time returned by Nabei was lower than the fastest time of 2:10:23 recorded in the 2020 Access Bank City Marathon, the time was the second-fastest ever in the history of the 6-year-old Marathon.
According to local media reports, this is the fourth time a Kenyan is emerging as the winner of the Men’s category of the 42km Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.
Two Ethiopians Daresa Geleta and Demiso Legese finished second and third positions respectively in the men’s category.
In the women’s category, Ethiopian Meseret Dinke emerged the winner with a record time of 2:28:51 and $30,000 prize money. Dinke had won the 2019 edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.
Celestine Jepchirchir of Kenya and lDesta Nigist Mulune of Ethiopia finished second and third respectively in the women’s category
In the Nigerian Marathon category, Istifanus Peter Mahan won the race and the N1 million prize money.
The reports added that only 300 elite runners participated in Marathon due to strict COVID-19 protocols.
