The Kenya Meteorological Department on Thursday allayed fears that Cyclone Kenneth will hit the Kenyan coast, noting that Cyclones cannot come close to the equator.
Kenneth Cyclone will be the first tropical cyclone to strike Mozambique’s northern province of Cabo. The devastating strong winds are also expected to sweep through parts of Tanzania from Thursday.
Last month, Cyclone Ida left 185 people dead and more than 16,000 people displaced from their households in Mozambique.
“It is false that cyclone Kenneth will hit the Kenyan Coast. By the laws of physics, Cyclones cannot come this close to the equator,” said the meteorological department in a statement issued in Nairobi.
The Equator passes about 4 miles south of the town Nanyuki in Laikipia County.
However, the department noted that the country may experience the effects of the cyclone in the form of enhanced rainfall over parts of Isiolo and Samburu in northern Kenya, Western Kenya and the capital, Nairobi.
