Ethiopia once again accused Sudan of serving the interests of a third party over the negotiation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Addis Ababa, Dina Mufti has said.
Briefing journalists on Thursday Dina said Ethiopia has addressed all Sudan’s concern with regard to the filling and safety of the dam.
“Ethiopia assured Sudan to take responsibility to the problem that might arise due to safety and operation of the dam” he added.
The Sudanese government’s stance on the Renaissance Dam negotiations before and after the border dispute is different.
Sudanese opposition to the dam came after the border dispute with Ethiopia and since then it has been actively expressing conflicting views on the GERD.
In November last year, clashes erupted between Sudanese and Ethiopian forces over Al-Fashqa, a swathe of fertile land settled by Ethiopian farmers that Sudan says lies on its side of a border demarcated at the start of the 20th century.
Ethiopia rejects this version of history.
In a statement in February , Ethiopia’s Foreign Affairs ministry said it believed “the conflict being trumpeted by the Sudanese government’s military could only serve the interests of a third party at the expense of the Sudanese people”.
Sudan’s Foreign ministry responded the same day saying “slander towards Sudan and accusation of being an agent for other parties is a grave and unforgivable insult”.
