Municipal authorities in Kigali are poised to apply punitive sanctions against restaurants operating in the city with poor standards of hygiene, APA learnt Wednesday.
The penalties to be slapped on offending business during a hygiene city tour include fines, and lifetime market access bans for their executives if they are found not complying with the established guidelines regulating hygiene in the Rwandan capital.
The hygiene standards spell that residential houses should not be used for restaurants, be located far away from landfills, and in a reasonable distance from residential areas and free from mud or filth.
In addition, the facility should also have rain water harvesting system, painted in white or yellowish and constructed with durable materials among others.
In Kigali city, hygiene, slow service and rude staff in some few restaurants have been described to be some key aspects most likely to annoy customers, along with sticky floors, noisy clientele and grubby toilets.
In a move to address this phenomenon, the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) has launched the second phase of a nationwide campaign dubbed “Na Yombi” a slogan in Kinyarwanda that loosely translates as “Receiving your clients warmly with both hands”.
