A group of about 500 Zimbabwean teachers are expected to sit for their final interviews next week in Harare, as a final round of recruitment to move to Rwanda in September this year, an official source revealed Wednesday in Kigali.
The recruitment is part of an exchange of education personnel deal signed between Rwanda and Zimbabwe this year.
So far, a group of 491 Zimbabwean teachers have been shortlisted out of a pool of 916 candidates who had submitted their credentials for consideration, it said.
The minimum requirement for the educators is a bachelor’s degree and postgraduate qualification.
The newly recruited teachers will be deployed under four categories, basic education, basic TVET, polytechnic and Universities, Charles Karakye, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education in Kigali said.
The latest development is similar to a period between 2005 and 2010 when the Rwandan government welcomed an influx of Ugandan teachers.
The Ugandans, especially English teachers, were in so much demand that the High Commission in Kampala published advertisements in Ugandan media.
In a virtual signing ceremony held in December last year, Rwanda’s education minister Dr Valentine Uwamariya and Zimbabwe’s public service minister Paul Mavima put pen to paper.
The MoU on exchange of educational personnel and expertise follows a Zimbabwean trade mission in September last year where Rwandan President Paul Kagame revealed the country urgently needed English teachers.
He said Zimbabweans could fill that void.
