Heavy rains in Attecobe, a town in the economic capital of Cote d’Ivoire, on Thursday caused fatal landslides for four adults and two children.
Cote d’Ivoire’s weather department had announced heavy rains from June to August 2022. In anticipation of this, the state decided at the end of May to evacuate 4,000 households in several communes of Abidjan.
The rain that fell in Attecoubé, in the west of the Ivorian economic capital, caused six deaths according to the fire department (GSPM), which conducted a search operation there.
In addition, two injured people were evacuated to the University Hospital Centre (CHU) of Treichville, in the south of Abidjan. Prime Minister Patrick Achi and members of his government visited the site of the tragedy.
To prepare for any eventuality, the eviction of people from this high-risk area has been ordered. In the next six months, 25,000 people will be forced to leave their homes, according to the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. In 2018, torrential rains killed 18 people in Abidjan and caused significant material damage.
