APA-Johannesburg (South Africa) South Africa’s last known evacuee from war-torn Sudan, Deon du Toit, is expected to arrive home on Tuesday or Wednesday, according to the Gift of the Givers charity body in Port Sudan in Sudan.
The charity said on Sunday it had worked “hand in hand” with the South African consulate to secure the safe evacuation of the last South African wanting to leave war-torn Sudan – and join scores of their compatriots who were rescued last week from the country.
There are three other South Africans who have decided that they would remain in the country for now, the charity’s founder Imtiaz Sooliman said.
However, Sooliman did not name the remaining South Africans.
He said paperwork had been arranged and that a ship should be arriving in the port on Sunday evening to take du Toit to Jeddah.
“Deon has been cleared to travel on that ship to Jeddah. And if things go well – because they do change in a war situation – he should be in Jeddah late Monday afternoon,” he said.
According to Sooliman, du Toit should be home either on Tuesday or most likely on Wednesday depending on the availability of the flight.
