Eight months after Mahaman Idriss Deby Itno won the presidential election, Chadians are once again being called to the polls for legislative, provincial and municipal elections.
Candidates for the legislative, provincial and municipal elections scheduled for December 29, 2024 in Chad have been given additional time to file their candidacies. In a circular dated October 23, 2024, the National Election Management Agency (ANGE) announced the extension of the deadline for submitting candidacies.
Originally scheduled for October 19-28, this period has now been extended to November 1, 2024. According to a memo signed by ANGE head Ahmed Bartchiret, the measure is intended to “allow massive participation by political parties and groups of political parties” in the three year-end elections.
ANGE urges political organisations to respect the deadlines and to collect the necessary documents for the preparation of candidacy files. It also reminds them of the importance of complying with the legal provisions in force.
The elections of December 29, 2024 are of particular importance because they will include three simultaneous votes: legislative, provincial and municipal.
The extension of the candidacy filing period is part of an “adapted timetable” established by ANGE, which reflects the electoral authorities’ desire to encourage the widest possible participation in this crucial democratic event for the country.
This decision comes just days after the main opposition candidate, Succès Masra, announced that his party, Les Transformateurs, would not participate in the December elections.
