APA-Maseru (Lesotho) Renewable energy firm Astra Energy Inc. has signed an agreement with a Lesotho government entity under which the US-based company will develop a 100MW clean energy park in the southern African country.
Astra said in a notice on Thursday that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with the Lesotho National Development Corporation to develop the 100-MW clean and renewable energy park in Lesotho.
“The project will improve reliability of electricity delivery that is critical to a growing economy,” the company said.
The project is also expected to create direct and indirect jobs and positively affect other sectors of the Lesotho economy that primarily rely on a consistent and cost-effective supply of electric power.
The company said it would own and operate the Lesotho project as an independent power producer.
The investment would follow the same business model implemented for the 50-MW Clean and Renewable Energy Park being jointly developed by Astra and Zanzibar Electricity Corporation in Zanzibar, and the 350-MW combined cycle power plant in mainland Tanzania being developed together with the Tanzania Electric Supply Company.
