The Revolution for Prosperity (RFP), which emerged victorious in Lesotho’s parliamentary elections held last week, has formed a coalition government with two opposition parties after failing to garner an outright majority, party leader Sam Matekane said late Tuesday.
The RFP got 56 seats of the 120-member parliament in elections held on October 7 and needed to court other parties to form a majority.
Matekane told journalists in Maseru that the RFP had formed an alliance with the Alliance of Democrats and the Movement for Economic Change.
The parties are finalising a coalition agreement that would be made public once approved, the millionaire businessman said.
He said the coalition had set an ambitious work programme that would see it tackling “crime and eradicating corruption within the (first) 100 days in office.”
“One thing for sure of the many things that we are going to do is to downsize the cabinet, and all our members will declare their assets, including myself,” Matekane said.
He noted that the coalition was inheriting a bankrupt government and would implement several austerity measures to contain costs, including “using our personal cars and staying in our homes until things have gone back to normalcy.”
