APA-Monrovia (Liberia) The anti-graft body followed a campaign promise by President Joseph Boakai to rein in corruption in Liberia’s administration.
A new body to investigate and prosecute cases of corruption and financial impropriety in the George Weah admnistration has been instituted in Liberia, APA can report from Monrovia Wednesday.
It is tasked with recovering assets belonging to the state that were stolen by former officials of the erstwhile government led by Weah who was defeated by Boakai in a poll run off last year.
Weah’s successor took office in January with a vow to probe and prosecute corruption cases.
Mr Boakai’s executive order instructed the task force to probe suspect cases of wrongful acquisitions by former officials that deprived the state and the public of precious resources.
During his campaign for election last year, President Boakai had criticised what he called rampant corruption in his predecessor’s administration which he blamed for not doing enough to address it.
The probe will cover the illegal acquisition of assets belonging to the state with a view to recovering them.
The task force will also be involved in negotiating the extradition of other based abroad but fingered in corruption in Liberia.
With the composition of the task force completed, Presdent Boakai has instructed its members to start work without delay.
