APA-Monrovia (Liberia) George Weah, the incumbent in Liberia’s presidential run-off vote has conceded defeat, calling his rival Joseph Boakai to congratulate him on what appears to be an irreversible victory.
According to the National Election Commission Boakai of the opposition Unity Party polled 50. 89 percent of the vote.
President Weah of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change managed 49.11 percent of the ballot.
With 99.48 percent of the results from the country’s polling stations announced, the 78-year old former vice president has an unassailable 28, 000 votes more than Mr. Weah who has capitulated to the same opponent he defeated so convincingly in 2017.
The 57-year old former world footballer of the year has been president since 2018 but had faced strong criticism over ‘rampant; corruption and an apparent failure to fix Liberia’s struggling economy.
