The House of Representatives passing the 2019/2020 budget and the establishment of a war crimes court dominate the headlines in the Wednesday, October 2 editions of Liberian newspapers.
The lower House of Liberia’s bicameral legislature on Tuesday, October 1,passed the 2019/2020 National Budget in the amount of US$526 million.
The budget which should have been passed in June and took effect in July, has been forwarded to the Senate for concurrence.
The Daily Observer newspaper published this story as its front page banner headline under the caption: Houses Passes ‘Harmonized 2019/2020 US$526M Budget, while the Inquirer published it on its front page under the title: House Passes Budget.
President Weah has again cast doubt on the establishment of a war crimes court to prosecute individuals who committed heinous atrocities during the country’s civil conflict which lasted from December 1989 to 2003 and claimed an estimated 250,000 lives.
President Weah cast the doubt in his remarks upon his return from the UN General Assembly Tuesday evening at the Roberts International Airport in Marshall, Margibi County. He told scores of citizens who had gathered at the airport to welcome him that his focus during these difficult times is to revive the economy, rather establish a war crimes court.
