Liberia President George Manneh Weah has called for increased cooperation and unity amongst Mano River Union (MRU) member states to ensure that practical actions are taken on bilateral and multilateral agreements.
In remarks during a meeting with the Republic of Guinea’s Special Envoy and Minister of African Integration and Cooperation, Madam Diene Keita on Sunday at his private residence on the outskirts of the capital Monrovia, President Weah underscored the urgent need for leaders of the Mano River Union to work earnestly to address and overcome the many socio-economic and cultural barriers confronting the regional organization and peoples of the sub-region.
He said without unity, peace and cooperation, it would be impossible for the sub-region to achieve the fundamental goals of mutual trade and economic integration for which the MRU was established.
The Liberian leader called for the actualization of agreements and communiques among MRU Leaders, bemoaning the lack of direct flights between and among MRU member states, especially Liberia and Guinea.
President Weah said it was important that Liberia and Guinea work towards establishing direct flights in order to ease travel constraints citizens face with trade and commerce between the two
countries.
He indicated that it would be difficult for citizens and organizations in MRU countries to achieve shared prosperity and unhindered free movement of goods and services in the absence of connecting flights and road connectivity.
The Liberian President and the Guinean Envoy discussed the need to strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries.
The Mano River Union established in 1971, groups together Sierra Leone, Guinea, Liberia and Cote d’Ivoire.
