President George Weah is encouraging Liberians to remain on the path of peace, as the country continues to erase its past history of violence.
In remarks at a ceremony marking the dedication of the project to re-roof homes in the slum of Gilbratar at the weekend, the Liberian leader urged ecstatic residents, most of whom are beneficiaries of the new zinc roofs to remain engaged and supportive of government and philanthropists in efforts intended to transform lives through different empowerment programs and development projects.
President Weah said he understands that some Liberians have issues they want to express, but they should do so within the confines of the Constitution in an effort to sustain the hard-won peace the country is currently enjoying.
He reminded people planning the June 7 protest to bear in mind that while it is their right to make their case to the government by assembling to present petitions, other Liberians also have the right to go to work and open their shops and stores for business.
He also said: “I am President for all Liberians. My Responsibility is to make sure that we all join hands to move this country forward.”
“I was elected democratically. You gave me a six-year mandate… now, give me my six years and see what I’ll achieve and all Liberians will decide in the next elections,” the President sad, while addressing a huge gathering before the home of his late grandmother where he was
raised before hitting stardom in his soccer career.
The Liberian leader cited as a case in point, the toppling of a president in 1980 which resulted into people fleeing into exile in refugee camps, but pointed out: “Our path to refugee camps was long over. We are moving towards prosperity, so let’s bear in mind that marginal incidents must not take us back to the ugly past.”
When he announced the reroofing of houses in Gilbratar in April 2018, the President expressed the unbending love he has for the community and people living there, and has been working with them long prior to becoming leader of the nation.
