Libya’s warlord Gen Khalifa Hafter will relinquish his military role to run for the country’s presidency in December, APA has learnt on Thursday.
Haftar will be leaving his position as military general in accordance with a controversial law which dictates that military officers with an interest in the presidency should step down from those roles as a matter of requirement.
However, the same law points out that those who have done so may return to their old positions should they lose the election.
While General Haftar’s allies have applauded the legislation, it has been rejected by his opponents.
Under a new agreement Libya is set to hold elections in December but there are fears that protracted tensions could cast doubt about the exercise taking place.
