Libya seems to be inching closer to political normality after renegades headquartered in the east of the country on Tuesday handed over power to the new administration based in the capital Tripoli.
In a solemn ceremony, Benghazi which had been the headquarters of those fighting the UN-backed government in Tripoli was formally handed over to the new regime led by Abdul Hamid Dbeibah.
Libya has been rocked by a violent civil war after the overthrow in an armed uprising of strongman Muammar Gaddafi in October 2011.
The North African country had been split up as rival governments based in Tripoli and Benghazi competed for control of territory with devastating social and political consequences.
However, after last week’s swearing in of a new government, there is newfound optimism that Libya’s troubled past may soon become history.
