APA – Kigali (Rwanda) – At least one person was killed in Musanze district, Northern Rwanda after a hand grenade he discovered during a farming activity exploded, local officials confirmed Thursday.
According to Vedaste Tuyisenge, the executive secretary of Nyange sector in Musanze district, the victim picked the device that he confused with a precious stone, unaware that it was a grenade and it exploded.
Nyange sector is located near the Virunga mountains which straddle the area between Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Among the active rebel groups operating in this mountanious region includes the Democratic Republic of Congo include the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), the remnant of the forces that authored and carried out the Rwandan Genocide against Tutsis in 1994.
The Rwandan government has accused DR Congo of collaborating with the FDLR militia, remnants of the perpetrators of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, in shelling on Rwandan territory.
