Heavy rains have wreaked havoc in Western Rwanda over the weekend inundating many low-lying areas and main roads and restricting movement for local residents, a police source said Monday.
Highway connecting Western Rwanda to Kigali has closed indefinitely over the weekend as a result of rain damage, the Police said.
It was unclear exactly how long the closure would last, but the situation would be revisited after assessing the damages.
Heavy rains and strong winds wreak havoc in Rwanda’s west, south and East as we transit from February to March, the Rwanda meteorological Agency said in its latest forecast last week.
The forecast cites convergence of wind and increased moisture over the region as the factors to influence the weather.
The weather warning comes as part of the seasonal forecast that predicted more rains in the first three months of the year than the previous years.
Released early January, the outlook forecasted “a chance of above-normal and normal rains over most parts of the country,” especially the southwestern Rwanda.
