The Malawi Defence Force (MDF) has rubbished speculation that some of its members are planning a coup d’etat against President Lazarus Chakwera, according to media reports monitored here on Monday.
Online publication Nyasa Times on Monday reported that MDF commander Vincent Nundwe has dismissed talk of an imminent military takeover of the government, saying that the force was fully behind Chakwera and his administration.
“We have heard through social media that the MDF is planning to take over government. I would like to say that whoever is doing that is silly,” the publication quoted Nundwe as saying during a graduation parade for cadet MDF officers at the weekend.
Nundwe allegedly accused unnamed opposition politicians of trying to use the MDF to advance their agendas of dislodging the government.
Part of the speculation was that disgruntled MDF officers had already detained Nundwe as part of their grand plan to topple Chakwera and install a military regime.
