APA-Lilongwe (Malawi) At least 20 people are suspected to have died after their canoe was hit by a hippo and capsized on the Shire River in southern Malawi, state television reported on Tuesday.
Malawi Broadcasting Corporation Television said the victims were part of a group of 37 Malawians who were going to work in their gardens on the other side of the river.
The body of a one-year-old boy washed ashore while more than 20 people are missing and 13 others swam to safety.
The broadcasters said rescue teams were on the ground looking for the missing persons.
The canoe accident is the third deadly incident on the river in three years.
