The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has set July 2 as the day when for the fresh presidential elections ordered by the Constitutional Court early this year.
MEC chairperson Jane Ansah that the date is within the 150 days that the Constitutional Court had in February given the electoral body to organise fresh presidential polls following a successful opposition challenge of President Peter Mutharika’s re-election last year.
“The commission has done its groundwork and is ready to hold the fresh elections,” Ansah said in the commercial capital Blantyre on Monday.
Voter registration is expected to run from April 4 to June 7 while nomination of candidates would take place on April 23-24 in Blantyre.
Political campaigns are expected to run from May 2 to June 30.
Counting of results is expected to commence immediately after voting closes on July 2, with results expected within eight days.
