APA-Lilongwe (Malawi) The Malawi government is investigating a fire at a building in the capital Lilongwe that houses offices of some of its department, Information Minister Moses Kunkuyu announced late Sunday.
In a statement, Kunkuyu said the fire gutted the two floors of Tikwere House where the “Ministry of Lands (Lands Registry and Deeds Registry), Office of the President and Cabinet (Government Contracting Unit) and the Judiciary (Community Services Department)” are located.
“Investigations led by the Malawi Police Service with support from other security agencies are underway to determine the cause of the fire,” Kunkuyu said.
He, however, allayed fears that the fire could have destroyed sensitive information, saying “all information is intact as it is backed up digitally.
There was speculation on Sunday that the fire could have been the work of saboteurs and that critical information may have been lost.
