A Chinese national on the run from Malawi for allegedly filming children singing racist chants in Chinese has been arrested in neighbouring Zambia, a senior immigration official said on Monday.
Department of Immigration spokesperson Pasqually Zulu said Lu Ke was arrested in Chipata in the east of Zambia where he had been hiding since Malawian police launched an investigation into allegations of racism and child exploitation.
He said the two governments have initiated the process of extraditing the Chinese national to face charges in Malawi.
Allegations against Lu are that exploited children in Malawian villages by filming them making racist remarks about themselves using Chinese phrases that they did not understand.
The videos are available for purchase on Chinese social media and internet platforms where they are selling for up to US$70 each.
In one of the videos an unsuspecting Malawian child is heard chanting in Chinese that “I’m a black monster. My IQ is low”.
Several Chinese nationals have been accused of racism and ill-treatment of their workers in most African countries.
