Malawi has ordered the destruction of 16,400 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine after they expired before they could be used, an official said on Thursday.
The vaccines were part of a consignment of 102,000 doses that were donated by the African Union in March.
The vaccines in question were not used on time and expired on Tuesday, according to permanent secretary for Ministry of Health Charles Mwansambo.
“We will now destroy and dispose of (them),” Mwansambo said.
President Lazarus Chakwera launched its COVID-19 vaccination campaign in March and plans to immunise 60 percent of the population by the end of the year.
