Mali’s Prime Minister Choguel Maiga, on Thursday, assured that 24 months will be enough to establish a new Republic.
Malians now know where they stand. In front of the members of the National Council of Transition (CNT), a legislative body, the head of government detailed the different stages for a return to constitutional order in accordance with the commitment made to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
There is no time to lose, “we will, from next week, unfold the program. We have decided not to wait any longer,” Choguel Maiga said. However, the Prime Minister was keen to point out that the transitional period of 24 months is “incompressible to implement the foundations of the change process.”
In the next eight months, “if the law on the single body is passed, we can make it operational,” he said. An equivalent period of time will be needed, Maiga said, for “the installation of electoral materials, the training of electoral officers and the audit of the updated file. Finally, three months will be dedicated to “preparations for electoral operations, the campaign and the holding of the referendum,” he added.
According to the Malian Prime Minister, the current context is favorable to an agreement with sub-regional organizations for the lifting of sanctions: “Ecowas and Uemoa (West African Economic and Monetary Union) are partners with whom we have not broken off. Discussions are ongoing.
