The transition authorities in Mali on Thursday announced the holding of presidential and legislative elections on Sunday February 27, 2022.
Seven months after the inauguration of transition president Bah N’Daw, his government is working to implement the roadmap.
This should lead to the return of power in civilian hands through the holding of free and transparent elections.
“For the election of the President of the Republic and the MPs, the proposed dates are in strict compliance with the duration of the transition, meaning 18 months,” said the Minister of Territorial Administration, Lieutenant-Colonel Abdoulaye Maiga, after a meeting in the capital Bamako.
The second rounds of the elections are possibly set for March 13 and March 20, 2022, he added.
But before that, a referendum is scheduled for October 31, 2021.
According to Mr. Maiga, this period will be used to carry out consultations for the development of the draft Constitution, its examination by the Council of Ministers and its adoption by the National Council of Transition (CNT).
The Minister of Territorial Administration said that the authorities wanted to use this opportunity to gather and take into account the aspirations of the Malian people.
Elections for local councillors (district, commune, cercle, region) are scheduled for December 26, 2021.
“It is proposed to hold these elections at the same time in order to avoid calling voters repeatedly, which would lead to exhaustion and consequently a drop in the turnout rate” Minister Maïga said.
