Clashes in the Mopti region have intensified since April 2021, making any humanitarian action difficult.
After the blockade imposed on the villagers by armed groups was lifted on 20 December, teams from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) are back.
From 27 to 31 December 2021, the humanitarian organisation provided food assistance to 3,000 people and carried out medical and nutritional care for around a hundred patients in the village.
“This was an important humanitarian mission to help thousands of people suffering the consequences of the conflict,” said Freya Raddi, the ICRC’s deputy head of delegation. “Our teams met with people facing a worrying food situation. I am very happy to see that the authorities, community leaders and all stakeholders have made it possible for this aid to be delivered,” she added.
The ICRC hopes to conduct a follow-up visit in January 2022. In the same vein, further assistance will reach residents in need in Marebougou. It will assess and respond to the humanitarian needs of communities in other locations that may be in the same situation.
In recent years, insecurity has taken hold in the Djenné Circle in Mopti. Since April 2021, clashes in this region have increased, making it impossible for people to move in and out of the village of Marebougou.
