Brussels accused the prime minister and five other officials of obstructing the political transition in Mali.
After the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) took action, the European Union (EU) were next in line to impose sanctions against the junta in Bamako.
In addition to transitional Prime Minister, Choguel Kokalla Maïga, Colonels Malick Diaw, President of the National Transitional Council (CNT) and Ismaël Wagué, Minister of National Reconciliation, Ibrahim Ikassa Maïga, Minister of State Refoundation, in charge of relations with institutions, and Adama Ben Diarra, activist and member of the CNT, are targeted by the sanctions.
The EU accuses them of having played a key role in the overthrow of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.
The sanctions include a ban on entry into the EU and a freeze on their assets.
In addition, individuals and entities of the organisation will be prohibited from making funds available to these five officials.
The five individuals are already under Ecowas sanctions.
