The Special Assize Court for Economic Crimes decided on October 9, 2024, to refer the case back to investigation at the prosecution’s request.
The trial, which was initially relaunched in 2021, sought to investigate financial irregularities dating back to 2014 involving the embezzlement of public funds. The purchase of a presidential plane for nearly 20 billion CFA francs and military equipment contracts totaling 69 billion CFA francs were under scrutiny.
Despite capturing public attention, the trial has been plagued by delays and uncertainties. The court’s decision to refer the case for further investigation, including hearings with key witnesses, has pushed the proceedings back into a new phase of uncertainty.
The postponement of the trial has left many Malians disappointed, as they were hoping for a swift resolution and clear answers regarding the alleged misappropriation of public funds. The suspension of hearings on October 15, 2024, has left major accusations unresolved.
