The Marrakech African Book Festival (FLAM) is currently underway, bringing together writers, readers, and enthusiasts of African literature for a vibrant celebration of culture and creativity.
Held at the historic Jamaâ el-Fna square, FLAM 2025 offers a diverse program of events, including readings, debates, and workshops, all aimed at showcasing the richness and diversity of African literature.
This year, the festival places a special emphasis on female voices, highlighting the crucial role of women in shaping African society and culture.
A key highlight of the festival is the “Literary Cafés,” where young writers share the stage with renowned authors such as Mohamed Mbougar Sarr, winner of the prestigious Prix Goncourt. “Les Palabres,” a series of discussions, delve into important themes such as negritude and the future of Africa on the world stage.
FLAM 2025 also emphasizes youth engagement, with dedicated spaces for young writers and a focus on encouraging their literary pursuits. Workshops, masterclasses, and a dedicated “High School Literary Prize” provide young people with opportunities to engage with literature and develop their own creative voices.
Beyond its cultural significance, FLAM aims to foster reconciliation and unity across the African continent. As co-founder Mahi Binebine emphasized, “Our literature must go beyond the silences of the colonial past. It is essential that we read each other and understand each other.”
As FLAM 2025 unfolds, it serves as a vibrant platform for cultural exchange, fostering dialogue and promoting a deeper understanding of African perspectives and experiences. The festival exemplifies the power of literature to connect people, inspire creativity, and contribute to a more united and prosperous future for Africa.
