The Confederation of African Football on Tuesday unveiled the list of nominees for the 2024 CAF Awards scheduled for mid-December in Marrakech.
In less than a month, Marrakech, Morocco, will host the 2024 CAF Awards, a prestigious celebration dedicated to African football stakeholders.
Ahead of the event scheduled for December 16, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unveiled the list of players, coaches and teams, who have distinguished themselves during the 2023-2024 season.
The most coveted categories include African Player of the Year, Interclub Player of the Year, African Goalkeeper of the Year, Coach of the Year, Young Player of the Year, as well as the Club and National Team of the Year awards.
These distinctions each bring together 10 nominees, selected by a panel composed of the CAF Technical Commission, specialized media, as well as coaches and captains of member associations and clubs involved in interclub competitions.
The flagship category, African Player of the Year, highlights leading figures such as Achraf Hakimi (Morocco/PSG), finalist in 2023, or Serhou Guirassy (Guinea/Borussia Dortmund). Alongside them, rising talents such as Amine Gouiri (Algeria/Rennes) and Simon Adingra (Côte d’Ivoire/Brighton & Hove Albion) will try to assert themselves.
In the African Goalkeeper of the Year category, Ronwen Williams (South Africa/Mamelodi Sundowns) stands out with a triple nomination, also appearing among the candidates for the titles of African Player and interclub Player of the Year.
On the coaching side, the Coach of the Year category honours technicians who have left their mark on the African scene, such as Florent Ibenge (Al Hilal), Emerse Fae (Côte d’Ivoire) and Pedro Gonçalves (Angola).
On the club side, the Club of the Year category celebrates teams that have shone on the continental scene. Among the contenders are: Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa), Petro Atlético (Angola), Al Ahly (Egypt), Zamalek (Egypt), Dreams FC (Ghana), RS Berkane (Morocco), TP Mazembe (DR Congo), Simba (Tanzania), Young Africans (Tanzania) and Espérance Sportive de Tunis (Tunisia).
The National Team of the Year category brings together national teams that have left their mark on 2024 with their performances. The nominees include: South Africa, Angola, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Morocco, Mozambique, Nigeria, Uganda, Sudan and DR Congo.
Finally, the hopes of African football are highlighted in the Young Player of the Year category, where prodigies such as Karim Konate (Côte d’Ivoire/Salzburg) and Lamine Camara (Senegal/AS Monaco) are among the favourites.
The winners will be chosen following a vote involving technicians, journalists, coaches and captains, offering a global vision of the dynamism of African football. While waiting for the announcement of the nominees for the women’s categories, this edition of the CAF Awards promises to once again celebrate the excellence and talent of the continent.
In 2023, Victor Osimhen (Nigeria) and Asisat Oshoala (Nigeria) were crowned African Player of the Year, leaving an indelible mark on the history of this event.
