Botswana will hold its general elections on October 30, President Mokgweetsi Masisi announced on Tuesday.
This important announcement comes as the country prepares for a competitive electoral season, with parties gearing up to nominate their candidates.
In a video shared on his social media accounts, Masisi outlined the timeline for the election process, with presidential candidates to be nominated at the Gaborone High Court on September 28, while nominations for parliamentary and council candidates are set for October 4.
“I am pleased to announce that the 12th Parliament of the Republic of Botswana will be dissolved on 5th of September 2024…setting the stage for the upcoming general elections,” Masisi said.
To encourage higher voter turnout, both October 30 and 31 have been designated as public holidays, a move aimed at facilitating greater participation in the democratic process.
The elections are particularly significant as they would shape the future governance of Botswana, a country known for its stable democracy and peaceful transitions of power.
