Dozens of protesters have defied a ban preventing them from taking to the streets of the capital Kampala, on Tuesday to voice their opposition against rampant corruption.
Several arrests have been made including in the hours leading up to the protest.
The route of the protest took demonstrators to the country’s parliament building where they demanded the resignation or removal of Speaker Anita Among who was fingered in a corruption scandal and is currently under investigation.
Among and two other officials are also under UK and UN sanctions for infractions linked to ”stealing from poor communities in Uganda”.
The organisers of the demonstration had vowed to go ahead with their protest plans despite being denied a permit by the police.
Several arrests were made in the hours leading to Tuesday’s protest, according to opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi also known by his musical stage name Bobi Wine.
The Daily Monitor reports that dozens of protesters detained early on Tuesday morning were heard chanting ‘Speaker Among must go’.
Speaker Anita Among is among three officials under investigation for corruption, although she denies any wrongdoing.
The protesters are demanding among other things that cases of graft be investigated, prosecuted and offenders jailed.
Meanwhile the Ugandan police say the protesters have been infiltrated by political activists.
