APA – Kigali (Rwanda) – A construction crew unearthed a mystery when they dug up a mass grave at Amahoro stadium located in the suburb of Kigali city while working, APA learnt Wednesday from a reliable source in Kigali.
Local administrative officials from Gasabo district where the stadium is located confirmed that remains of 32 people have been exhumed from the construction site over the past two weeks.
.
“There are bodies that have been found at the stadium. They have been removed from the site and taken to the premises of the administration of Remera Sector, so that more information is sought regarding them,” said Pauline Rutazana, Remera Sector’s Social Affairs team leader in Gasabo district.
Amahoro stadium hosted refugees from across the city as killings started in April 1994. The then Hutu genocidaire militia and the military and police units attacked the building from time to time before Rwanda Patriotic Army liberators rescued them and helped them flee to the RPA-controlled zones north of Kigali.
One of the genocide survivor confessed that there is a possibility that some people were killed and buried around Amahoro stadium in April 1994.
In addition, he said that on the night of April 6, 1994, the roads within the vicinity of the stadium as well as other areas close to Kigali International Airport were targeted by the Interahamwe and government soldiers.
“Many Tutsi who were found on the road were killed,” he said.
The genocide against Tutsi was sparked by the death of the Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana, a Hutu, when his plane was shot down above Kigali airport on 6 April 1994.
