One year after the legislative, municipal and regional elections, Mauritanians are once again being called to the polls. On Saturday June 29, 2024, they will elect their next president for a five-year term.
Officially, the seven candidates in the race for the post will meet voters between 13 and 27 June 2024. President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, whose party came first in the last elections, is seeking a second term of office.
Challenging him are opposition politician and “human rights activist” Biram Dah Abeid and Mohamed Lemine Elwavi, a senior civil servant at the Mauritanian Treasury.
Both Abeid and Elwavi took part in the 2019 elections.
The first time runners are Hamadi Ould Sid’ El Moctar, El Id Mohameden, Outouma Soumare and Mamadou Bocar.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) has assured stakeholders that all measures have been taken to guarantee a free, democratic and transparent vote, the results of which will be published on its website without delay.
