President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani has launched an ambitious emergency urban development program to modernize the capital city of Nouakchott. This comprehensive plan encompasses a range of infrastructure projects and public service improvements across various sectors.
The program, which includes investments in education, healthcare, transportation, water and sanitation, and public spaces, aims to significantly enhance the quality of life for residents of Nouakchott.
Key components of the plan include construction of 11 new primary schools and 19 new secondary schools, as well as the rehabilitation of 190 existing primary schools and 21 secondary schools, construction of 28 new health centers and rehabilitation of seven existing ones, expansion of the road network with 68 km of new urban roads and the construction of a 50 km ring road around the city, significant investments in improving access to drinking water, sanitation, electricity, and public lighting, and construction of sports facilities, including a semi-Olympic swimming pool, and implementation of programs to promote cultural and environmental activities.
The government emphasizes a participatory approach, involving municipalities and civil society in the planning and implementation of the program to ensure that the needs and aspirations of the local community are met.
This ambitious urban development program reflects the government’s commitment to improving the living conditions of its citizens and transforming Nouakchott into a modern and sustainable city.
